What to do when the chest strap doesn’t work?
Sometimes, it happens that the chest strap stops working. You can prevent it with proper maintenance. However, even with proper maintenance the chest strap just doesn’t work.
1. Check if the strap seats on the body and has contact with your skin
In order for the chest strap to measure, it’s necessary to provide contact with skin. Some people have problems with conductivity, or some men may have hirsute chest. Before using,
moisten the strap and even parts of your chest that are in contact with the strap with clean water. The strap should be constricted enough to stick, but wearing it should still be comfortable. If the strap still doesn’t work, proceed to step two.
2. Check the battery in the chest strap
Over 90 percent of problems with sport testers are caused by dead batteries.
The most of chest straps have removable batteries. Just unscrew the back cover (with a coin) and remove the battery. Use the „licking test“ to find out whether it’s functional. Just connect upper and bottom side of the battery with your tongue for a little while. If your tongue tingles, the battery is fine and the problem is somewhere else.
3. Check if the battery is placed right and if the contacts are okay
In the strap, there’s small electronics and a few contacts that weight on the battery. Especially while removing the battery, you must be careful around those contacts. Check if there’s anything broken or twisted and if the battery fits right in the case.
4. Check if the chest strap isn’t too salinized
After a long period of using, the chest strap can be salted from sweat. Therefore, you must clean the touch surface with water and soap, and if you own a textile chest strap (Polar), you can wash it in your hands. Textile chest straps are more vulnerable for salinization, and so it’s necessary to take care of it more. Nevertheless, it’s redeemed with much higher comfort while wearing it.
5. Try to go to a different place
It happens that if you’re near some strong source of interference, the strap can’t connect with the watch. Try the chest strap somewhere else, most appropriately outside.
