Polar M400

You’ve asked for a review on Polar M400 sport tester, so here we go.

The sport tester looks really good; it has attractive design, it’s comfortable and light.

Setting the watch up was very easy. I’ve looked into the manual and set up everything necessary; height, weight, date and time and also sports profiles which are running, cycling, other outdoor activities and other indoor activities.

However, the whole menu is English (German and other languages are available), and there’s no Czech localization. However, it should be added there; the manual is in Czech.

Polar M400 review, recenze

In the menu, you can find the following functions: diary, settings, fitness test, timers, favourites. The look of the display can be easily changed; just press the „up“ button.

The diary is a classic diary.

In the settings, you can set:

  • sports profile – running, cycling, other outdoors, other indoors; you also set the length of cycle, heart rate index, speed, the notification volume, etc.
  • physical profile – personal details like weight, height, date of birth, sex, the amount of training sessions per week, maximal hear rate index
  • main settings – pairing with other devices and phones, various notifications and ring tones, units, language, etc.
  • the watch settings – alarm, time and date, appearance

Fitness test

Fitness test: thanks to it, you can test your peace heart rate. You just put on your chest strap and rest for a while. This frequency is then used for training and setting your training zones.

Timers: here, you can set your timers; basic time and finishing distance.

Favourites: your favourite profile is set and picked after you sign up to the app on polar.com/flow.

Training

I tested Polar M400 during running. First, you have to pair the watch with chest strap. According to directions on the watch, it’s quite easy and fast, then you just go out and wait for the GPS signal. That takes a while – depending on your surroundings (with Garmin Vivoactive, which I’ve tested earlier, the GPS runs immediately). The display shows „OK“ and you’re good to go.

The watch is good to control while running. You can pick between several displays, depending on what you’re interested in watching. For example, time of the cycle, average speed of the cycle, super-elevation, heart rate frequency zones, and pace.

After finishing the training, your activity is saved and after connecting to a PC, you can evaluate your achievements. Download the PolarFlow Sync app necessary for synchronization and sign in to Polar Flow. After the synchronization is done, you’ll be automatically rerouted to the Polar website.

I also recommend washing the watch, heart rate sensor and chest strap in water with soap, after you finish training.

When it comes to battery life, with normal training (3-4 times per week), the battery lasts for more than 2 weeks, in my case it was 3 weeks. It depends on how often you use the GPS, but the minimum of 2 weeks is guaranteed.

Good luck with training.

New information:

I attended an event called Polar Day where we’ve been introduced to some new products for the next year. Also, we’ve been told a great news that all Polar watch should soon be able to work in Czech! The same goes for the Polar Flow app.

The M400 will also work with your mobile phone, thanks to the Smart feature which connects the sport tester with your phone. The connection will work on Android 4.3 and newer. The Bluetooth connection works since 4.0 and newer.
